How to Get More Google Reviews for Your Water-Treatment Business
Most water-treatment dealers do great installs and still lose jobs to competitors with more Google reviews. The fix isn't more customers — it's asking the customers you already have, the right way, every time.
Most water-treatment dealers do great installs and still lose jobs to competitors with more Google reviews. The fix isn't more customers. It's asking the customers you already have, the right way, every time.
Here's why it matters. When a homeowner searches "water softener near me," they compare companies on Google before they ever pick up the phone:
- 47% won't consider you under 20 reviews. 47% of consumers won't consider a business with fewer than 20 reviews (BrightLocal, 2026).
- 68% require 4+ stars. 68% will only use a business rated 4 stars or higher (BrightLocal, 2026).
- Recency matters. 49% feel more positive about a business that has a review from the last month (BrightLocal).
A dealer with 12 reviews from two years ago can lose to a newer company with 80 fresh ones — even if the first dealer does better work.
Why most water-treatment dealers have too few reviews
It's rarely because customers are unhappy. Water-treatment customers are often thrilled: softer skin, spotless dishes, no more bottled water. The problem is simpler.
- Nobody asks. The tech finishes the install, packs up, and drives to the next job.
- Asking is left to memory. Some weeks the owner remembers, most weeks they don't.
- It's too much work for the customer. "Search for us on Google and leave a review" loses most people at step one.
- The timing is off. Asking weeks later, when the excitement has faded, gets ignored.
Every one of these is a process problem — which means every one can be fixed.
7 ways to get more Google reviews
These steps only work if they happen after every single job. That's why the dealers with hundreds of reviews almost always automate it, so a review request goes out after every install without anyone having to remember.
- 1. Get your direct review link. In your Google Business Profile, click "Ask for reviews" to copy a short link that opens the review box directly. Customers tap it and start typing. No searching, no confusion. Every other step on this list uses this link.
- 2. Ask at the moment of "wow". The best time to ask is right after the install, when the customer first tastes the RO water or feels the soft water in the shower. The second-best time is 3 to 7 days later, once they've lived with it. Don't wait a month.
- 3. Send the request by text, not email. Most people read a text within minutes. Emails get buried. Send a short, friendly text with your review link the same day as the install.
- 4. Have your tech ask in person. A simple line at the end of the job works: "If you're happy with everything, a quick Google review really helps a small business like ours. I'll text you the link." Keep it friendly and pressure-free, and never ask them to mention the tech by name.
- 5. Leave a review card with a QR code. A small card with your logo, a thank-you line, and a QR code that opens your review page. Techs hand it over with the paperwork. It works for customers who prefer to do it later.
- 6. Ask your past customers. If you've been in business for years, you likely have hundreds of happy customers who were never asked. Send one friendly text to your past customer list. Service and maintenance visits are another perfect moment to ask.
- 7. Follow up once, then stop. If they don't leave a review within 2 to 3 days, send one gentle reminder. One. More than that feels pushy.

What not to do: Google's review rules
Breaking these can get reviews removed or your profile flagged. Google's rules, including an update in April 2026, say:
- No incentives. No discounts, gift cards, free filters, or entries into a drawing in exchange for a review.
- No review gating. Don't send happy customers to Google and unhappy ones to a private form. Ask everyone.
- No pressure. Ask politely and let the customer decide. Never pressure someone to write a review on the spot.
- No staff quotas. Don't set a target number of reviews per tech.
- Don't script the content. Don't ask customers to mention a tech's name or say anything specific. Keep the ask open: "a quick review of your experience."
- No fake or insider reviews. No reviews from employees, family, or friends, and never buy reviews.
- Avoid sudden spikes. Hundreds of reviews in one week can look suspicious. A steady flow is better.
In the US, the FTC's rule on fake reviews also bans buying reviews and offering rewards tied to positive reviews (FTC, 2024).
How to reply to reviews
Replies matter almost as much as the reviews themselves. 88% of consumers would use a business that replies to all its reviews, against 47% for one that replies to none (BrightLocal, 2024).
A good reply takes 30 seconds: thank the customer by first name, mention one specific thing they said, keep it to 2 to 4 sentences in your own voice, and sign it with your name.
- For a negative review. Stay calm, thank them, say you're sorry they left frustrated, and invite them to call you directly to sort it out. Future customers judge you more by how you handle a complaint than by the complaint itself.
- Reply within a day or two. A profile full of quick, personal replies tells homeowners someone is paying attention.
Thanks, Sarah! Glad the softener and RO install went smoothly from start to finish. Enjoy the better water, and we're always here if you need anything. — Mike, [Your Company]
